I have just acquired a copy of ‘Digital Diaries’, by Natacha Merritt (Taschen books, ISBN 3-8228-6398-X).

It is a visual diary of Natacha herself as she keeps a record of her sex life. I assume most of the photographs have been taken by her, either at arm’s length or on a timer, and subsequently I would describe most of them as ‘snaps’. Blurred, out of focus, amateur.

Yet calling it ‘art’ somehow makes you look at the images again, and I suppose if that’s the voyeuristic look that the photographer was after, then it’s mission accomplished. But whilst they are certainly thought provoking, sometimes erotic images, they are certainly NOT good photographs.

I’m surprised how many models turn up for a shoot with their nails all stubby, badly kept and bitten to the quick! The girls must spend an absolute age on preening their hair and doing their makeup, yet neglect their nails.

The first things I look at when I meet a model is their eyes and then their nails. It’s not sufficient just to slap some polish on badly-kept, bitten nails to cover them up. Come on, girls. It’s part of the image – please look after your nails!
